Notes: Fairfieldite identification by Gene Bearss. Given the small size of these indistinct crystals, the fairfieldite identification is certainly open to challenge without further analysis.

FERRISYMPLESITE    Parker Mtn. Mine, Center Strafford, NH
4 mm field of view

Species:           FERRISYMPLESITE    Fe3+3(AsO4)2(OH)3 · 5H2O
Locality:          Parker Mtn. Mine, Center Strafford, NH
Specimen Size: 4 mm field of view
Field Collected: Tom Mortimer - 1995
Catalog No.: 1900
Notes: White ferrisymplesite crust on green-yellow scorodite on lollingite substrate. Ferrisymplesite indicated by EDS analysis . Arsenolite, As2O3 was reported from Parker Mtn. by Phillip Foster in 1966. It is also a white crusty mineral, but contains no iron. Scorodite, another iron-arsenic crusty mineral, Fe3+AsO4·2H2O has equal parts Fe and As, where-as this analysis indicates a mineral with Fe > As. It is unknown what level of testing was done by/for Foster to arrive at his arsenolite identification. Until a confirmed arsenolite specimen turns up, I am withdrawing arsenolite from the Parker Mtn. species list.
Given the possibility of other iron-arsenic species, additional testing is planned for this mineral.

KAOLINITE   Parker Mtn. Mine, Center Strafford, NH
1.3 cm view. Thin white crust of kaolinite on feldspar

Species:           KAOLINITE    Al2Si2O5(OH)4
Locality:          Parker Mtn. Mine, Center Strafford, NH
Specimen Size: 1.3 cm view. Thin white crust of kaolinite on feldspar
Field Collected: Tom Mortimer, May, 2010
Catalog No.:
Notes: Reprint of 1964 article, "The Parker Mountain Mine," by Philip C. Foster in Nov. 1982 issue of Granite Chips, newsletter of the Southeastern New Hampshire Mineral Club, states: "Kaolinite, while never officially recorded at this mine, is found as fine dusting coatings or as thin films on altering microcline, especially on the originally exposed surfaces of this mineral."
Kaolinite identification of this specimen confirmed by EDS analysis. Elements lighter than Na do not register on EDS detector.
The sub mm coating on this specimen is very loosly attached. A light brushing will easly detach it. Dirt particles remain on the kaolinite surface because of this risk.
